MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE AND MAINTENANCE CASES. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., was on the bench at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. George Harloy was fined 205., with tho alternative of spending seven days in gaoi, on a charge of drunkenness; and Robert Yallance, similarly charged, was fined 205., with the option of (serving 48 hours in gaol. Daniel M'Farlane was committed to Roto Roa for twelve months. An affiliation case against Bert Raymond Keith Andrews was dismissed without prejudice. John E. Slattery, whose arrears for maintenance totalled £5, was sentenced. to a month's imprisonment, 110 warrant to issuo if tho amount duo is paid within a fortnight. Eliza Weeds proceeded against' her husband, George Weeds, for separation, maintenance, and guardianship of four children, under 16 years of age, 011 tho ground of cruelty. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for complaint and stated that the parties had been married for about 32 years, and during the whole of her married life she had been cruelly treated. She took proceedings in June last, and thinking he had been sufficiently frightened by those proceedings, and on his promising to behave himself, the caso was withdrawn. The cruelty, however, continued, and she was obliged to bring the present proceedings. Hvidcnco was given by complainant and her son Harry. The defendant declined to give evidence. A separation order was made, the complainant was givon the custody of the children, and the defendant was ordered to pay 40s. a week maintenance, and solicitor's fee 425. Frederick Edwards, who was in arrears to the amount of_£l in respect to the maintenance? of his mother, was fined £5 and costs, in default one month's imprisonment.
