SIR EDWARD CARSON'S RESIGNATION
ACTUATED BY (PATRIOTIC MOTIVES. Ottawa, January 23. Sir Frederick Smith says that the resignation of Sir Edward Carson was undoubtedly actuated by patriotic motives. Ho was ready to support tiio Government's war measures, and also to uso his influence with his own partv. The Home Rule Convention might fail. If so, the British Government would not bo responsible. Tho matter wa6 one entirely for Irishmen themselves, but if they failed to arrive at a settlement the Government was likely to intervene. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
