THE FIGHT OFF THE DARDANELLES
DETAILS OF THE ENGAGEMENT PLUCKY ATTACKS BY OUR DESTROYERS • London,. January 23. The Admiralty publishes details of tho engagement with the warships Goeben and Breslau. They show that the destroyer Lizard, whilo patrolling, sighted tho Breslau-and Goeben going north. The Lizard opened fire. The Goebon now sighted monitors in Ivusu Bay, and engaged thorn, tho Breslau continuing to engage the Lizard, which was proventcd from closing at torpedo range by the enemy's accurate fire. Tho destroyer Tigress arrived, and both ■ made an effort under cover of tho monitors' smoke screen, but botli monitors were hit, and sank. The destroyers followed tho enemy. An explosion was observed on the Breslau six miles south of Kephalo, followed by throe more explosions, and sho sank in ten minutes. . Tho Goeben continuod south. Four euemy destroyers were then sighted coming out of the Dardanelles, supported by tho old Turkish cruiser Tigris. The Lizard immediately engaged the enemy destroyors, which retired, one of them being repeatedly hit. Our aircraft forced the Goeben to make for tho Dardanelles, and on turning she struck a mine, and steamed slowly back, escorted by enemy seaplanes and destroyers. The Goeben was now so damaged that she steered for the shore, and reached the end of Nagara Point. | —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Reuter. AIR ATTACKS ON THE GOEBEN TWO GOOD HITS. (Rec. January 24, 8.10 p.m.) , London, January 23. The Admiralty reports: "Our aircraft made a further day and night attack on the Goeben, and secured two hits with heavy bombs. They also bombed a tug which lay alongside. Anti-air-craft gunfire was encountered, but all the machines returned. The attacks continue."—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assu.R'eutcr. TURKEY'S VERSION OF THE ENCOUNTER. v . London, January 23. A Turkish official report states:— "In an attack by tho Goeben, Breslau, and destroyers, we destroyed two monitors, a transport ship, a signal station ; and. numerous munition depots.
