MAGISTRATE'S COURT

ALLEGED THEFT OF A (PURSE. ' Mr. S..E. M'Carthy, S.M., was on the bench at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. John Patrick Regan was charged that on January 22 he did steal a piirso valued at 7s; 6d.,--containing £45 in money, tho property of John Nolan. The complainant, John Nolan, slated that he was barman at the Cricketers,' Arms Hotel. While serving in the bar on January 22, about .1.0 a.m., tlm accused, to whom witness was indebted to tho amount of 95., came in. With t-he-object of discharging tho debt witness pulled his purse out of his pocket and placed tho purse on. tho counter. He was then called away tn another part of the bar, nnd when he returned to where ho hnd left his purse tho hitter was missing. ■ Tiio purse, contained £45 in-ninc £5 notes. ■ Witness asked the accused, who was then seated in the bar; h" ho.hnd. seen the purse. Hβ replied "No,■'■'""and witness' then telephoned for .the police.' Constable Scarry arrived, and oii making an attempt, to search .him the purse- was found under accused. Ho was silling ■on the-purse. ■ Richard J,. Green,,' an elderly man who was in tho bar when the incident occurred, and Constable Scarry gave corroborative evidence. ■

. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, -and was committed to tho Supreme Court for trial. John.Carrig ; , for whom Mr. 11. F. O'Leary appeared, was charged with indecent assault on ;i male on New Year's Eye. The court was cleared during tho hearing. After the evidence for tho prosecution was heard the accused pleaded: not guilty and was committal to'.the Supreme Court for trial. . Bail was refused..

■For insobriety; Annie Maud Sales, against whom- there were several.previous convictions, was fined £3, in default seven days' imprisonment. Thomas Connolly was'fined 205., with the alternative of- serving seven days. One first, offender was fined 10s., with the option of '24 hours' imprisonment, aud another who failed to appear, had his bail, of 20s. estreated. Harry- WhitborU, "charged with unlawfully assaulting Charles Anderson on.•'Anniversary Day, was remanded to appear this morning.
