AMERICAN SCHOONER WRECKED
« DISCOVERY NEAR GILBERT ISLANDS. lietwoon Tulagi, in the Solomon group, and Nauru, one of Burns, Philp and C 0 . ,? island steamers recently sighted what was supposed to be a derelict drifting in the Pacific. When the wreck was seen the steamer was heading for the Gilbert group. The derelict viis apparently that of an American schooner, with two stumps of the mrist.s showing above the water. A report, giving details of the position of the- derelict, was furnished to the proper authorities with a view to having the wrecit, which was a danger to navigation, rt-nioved. News was received on Tuesday from the Gilbert Group that a quantity of redwood timber had been washed up on the islatids. Hundreds of feet of the timber drifted Rslnre, and was secured by the natives. Tim timber had only been a sho.-t time in the water, and had evidently conic from some lumber-laden vessel. 'J'ho natives of the Gilbert Group were turning the timber to some acconnl, latest advicos being that they were actively employed building canoes out of tl.c redwood.
