GERMAN ATTACKS ON HOSPITAL SHIPS
UNFAIR ATTEMPT TO EXPLOIT SPANISH OFFICERS. (R'ec. January 21, 6.50 p.m.) Madrid, January 20. A semi-official statement denies the allegation of the "Cologne Gazette" that Spanish officers serving in British hospital ships in the Mediterranean had stated that these vessels had transported healthy troops. Tho statemont adds: "The Spanish Government affirms that 110 British hospital ships with Spanish officers on board hairs over abused our protection, or transported troops or war material of any sort."—Renter.
[It will be rcmemberod that on the previous occasion when tho Germans commenced a series of attacks on British hospital ships an agreement was arranged at the instance of Spain under which Spanish officers were to take jiost on hospital ships so as to he in a position to certify that none but sick and wounded was being carried.]
