ILLEGAL LOTTERY
TWO MEN FINED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 21. Clarenco R'ussell and "William A. Boyd were chargcd to-day with conducting an illegal lottery at Auckland Show. According to the evidence accused offered to conduct a surpriso packot scheme in aid of the Save the Babies' Fund, the chairman of the fund accepting the offer, but tolling the accused thc.v must themselves obtain permits. This they failed to do. The accused, who wore masks and fancy costumes, asserted that, the packets contained winning numbers in the proportion of 90s. for every 100 sold. Complaints were made to tho police that a few people seemed to be gaining all the prizes, and the police stopped the sale, impounding £17 18s. in a box containing the percentage for the fund. The police stated that Russell and Boyd had previous records of offences. Boy-1 was fined £2 and Russell was fined £1.
