THE PRICE OF HEMP
I The Prime Minister has received the 1 following cablegram from the High a Commissioner regarding the prices fixed | for New Zealand hemp in England:— | "With reference to your telegram of i January 2, have addressed representaI ■ tions to Hemp Controller, who states | that owing to decision of Shipping Minis. istry to increase freight all classes | hemp, and also increase "in _ market | values in the Philippines, Manila maxiI mum prices increased to: I grade, S £120; J grade, £100; K grade, £95; I L grade, £93; M grade, £80; higher fe grades unaffected. Secondly: New Zea--1 land increased to: Good, fair- £99; 3 high point, £97; fair, £96; anil tow: P Ist grade, £74; 2nd grade, £71; 3rd g grade, £69. Thirdly:—East African si|j sal, Ist grade, £99; 2nd grade, £97; | tow, £80. Fourthly:—St. Helena maxik mum prices fixed as follow: Ist grade, | £97; 2nd grade, £96; tow: Ist grade, J £71; 2nd grade, £69." js The higher prices are viewed with i satisfaction here, hut in consequence | of tho small amount of tonnage availi able for hemp cargo for London, tho f full values will not be obtainod by | New Zealand exporters. Tho shipping | companies are supposed to undertake | shipments to London of 1000 tons of 5 hemp per month, but' as a matter of I fact the space required for this rola- | tively small quantity is not invariably | obtainable. There are other markets, however, New York, for instance; but | there prices are fully £20 per ton unI der London—viz., £79 as against £99 I per ton. Given sufficient tonnage, the- | above rates for the New Zealand fibre 6 would be of great- benefit to the Do- | minion.
| Incidentally, it may he mentioned § that the St. Helena hemp, above rc- | ferred to, is from the New Zealand I phormium tenax, which has done very 1 well as an exotic on the famous island, | and provided congenial employment for I a number of its inhabitants who had I keenly felt the loss of shipping and I other business of the past.
