When tho torpedo struck the bhip Surgeon Smith and the first lieutenant were in tho wardroom aft. The wardroom was wrecked and the lieutenant rendered unconscious. All other exits being blocked, Surgeon Smith piled the wrecked furniture under the skylight and got the lieutenant through this on deck. He attended to a petty officer lying on deck with a broken arm and leg, and adjusted and blew up his lifebelt. . He then ?ot> the lieutenant overboard as the ship was foundering. The lieutenant was by this iimo partially conscious, but was again stunned by an explosion when tho vessel fouudered, and when picked up by the boat was apparently dead. Surgeon Smith applied artificial respiration until tho lieutenant showed signs of life, and he afterwards attended to the injured in the boat bo far as tho icircumstances allowed, until they were picked up forty-three hours later.
