NOTIFICATION OF MAILS

STATEMENT BY SIR JAMES ALLEN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christcliuroh, January 16. Referring to-day to the different policies adopted in Australia and New Zealand with leference to tho notification of arrival and departure of mails, Sir James Allen said that any chango in the present regulations would bo a matter i'or the Cabinet. "The present position is," he said, "that wo have definite instructions from the Home Government that we should not iclax our regulations in New Zealand, i"l-< though Canada has relaxed her regulations. Tlio matter was so represented 'to tlio Imperial Government that Canada was asked to leimpose strict conditions again, and as far as 1 know she did so. It is true that the Australians are not enforcing the same strict control, hut that is a matter for the Imperial authorities to consider. I want it to be understood that we do not want to imposo any restrictions. It is simply done for the purpose of saving our ships and the lives of our people. Too much information has «ot out about the movements of our vessels." _____
