PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE
. e — TO ENCOURAGE INDUSTRIES IN SOUTH CANTERBURY. By Telegraph-Press Association. Timaru, January 14. Mr. J. Craigie, M.1 , ., publishes a letter urging the formation of a South Canterbury Development League, to encourage dairying and fruit-growing, the encouragement of closer settlement, the application of electricity, and an extension of branch railways. Ho invites all the local authorities to consider tho proposal, pointing out that thousands of soldiers will want homes, and South Canterbury could accommodate many. Mr. Craigie is of opinion that other parts of tho South Island should follow Otago's example, as this island is stagnant in population and output compared with the North Island.
