MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES.

At tha Magistrate's Court yesterday Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., was on the Bench, and dealt with tho following cases

Harriet Maloney, for whom Mr. I'. W. Jackson appeared, was charged with the theft of a lady's apron valued at 10s., tho property of somo person or persons unknown. She was remanded for 'a week, bail being allowed in £10 and ono surety of £10. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed on William Hazel, who was convicted of boing au idlo and disorderly person in that he possessed insufficient lawful means of support. For a breach of his prohibition order Samuel Beattio was fined £5 and costs, in default ono month's imprisonment.

Robort M'Farlano and Mary Johnston were charged with using obscene language in Adelaide Road, 'lhe malo accused was convicted and fined £5, in default ono month's imprisonment,- and Mary Johnston was convicted and discharged. . A lad named Thomas Montgomery pleaded guilty to damaging a door lock, valued at 55., the property of William H. Parker. The lad explained that while playing with a ball the latter was accidentally thrown into the yard of the private residence, and in getting into ths yard to recover tho ball tl'o lock was broken. Defendant apologised, and offered to pay for the damage, but the complainant preferred to press tho matter in Court. Tho defendant was convicted and ordered to make good tho damage and pay witnesses' expenses, 12s.

Jean Crosswell was fined 10s. in committing a breach of the Post and Telegraph Act in putting an old stamp on a letter.

OTHER OASES. 'A fine of 205., with costs 75., was imposed on Stanley Burgess for driving a motor-car without having a number fixed to it. For leaving a motor-car unattended in the street H. Nattrass was fined 10s. and 7s. costs.

Edward James Whiteomb, for leaving a motor-cycle in the street without sufficient light was ajso fined 10s., with costs /s. For driving on the wrong side of the road, Thomas Owen Haycock was fined 20s. and costs 7s. Thoma3 Scholeficld, for riding a motor-cycle without a light, was fcned 10s. and costs 7s. The following wero convicted ard fined for allowing stock to wander: T. Hitchcox and James Fyfe were each fined 10s. and cost 75.; and Brownlee, Ltd., were fined 20s. and ordered to pay costs, 7s. Maurice Goldsborougli was fined 40s. and ordered to pay costs, 75., for failing to stamp a receipt for over £2 Georgo Jones was charged with allowing a boy under ten years of age to sell papers in the street. He gave a satisfactory explanation, and was convicted and discharged. John Millanto, a street hawker, was convicted and discharged for _ having unstamped scales in his possession, lhe Inspector of Weights stated that the scales were accurate, though unstamped, and the defendant did not think tliero was anything wrong so long aa tho scales were true. A fino of 40s. with costs 7s. was imposed on J. Clewer for employing a female assistant after 10.30 p.m. without permission. For boing absent from drill, I'. Guy was fined 405. ( with the alternative of 14 days' military detention.
