OVER A MILLION AND A HALF

SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER IN FRANCE

Washington, January 10. Mr. N. D. Baker, Secretary of War, told the Senate Military Investigation Committee that the United States Army now comprises 110,856 officers and 1,423,650 men. The transportation and training are proceeding at a speed that is unprecedented. A substantial .army is now in France. The Army's spirit is high, and the deathrate lower than in civil life. Mr. Baker added: "More has been done than anvbody believed. The accomplishments will depress the German morale when it is realised that we have not blundered and not hesitated, but have brought our full power in men and resources quickly against Germany.
