HARVESTERS' WAGES
HIGH RATES DEMANDED.
Under war legislation the Government has taken power to regulato the prices of commodities, but it has not apparently any power to regulate wages except by 'fixing minimum wages through the Arbitration Court. It is understood that representations have been mado to the Government to take action to fix maximum wages for harvest work. In somo districts mon have been asking for as much as 2s. 6d. s per hour, whereas the ordinary rate which the farmers think they should ■pay is Is. 6d. an hour, with "tucker." The farmers think that the Government should interfere to protect . them against these demands, whicli they consider extortionate, and they bavo appealed to the Government. No reply has been given by the Government to these representations, pending inquiries as to whether, the Government has any power to do what is being asked of it. It is believed, however, that the Government is powerless to intervene.
