NO MORE COMMISSIONS

EXCEPT FOE RETURNED MEN

Owing to tho reduction in the size of the reinforcement drafts, and tho sending back of so many more officers from the front with commissions, it will happen that in futuro thoro will be practically no vacancies for commissioned officers in tins country. This applies to territorial officers as well as to those men who may wiali to rise to commissioned rank in the camps. Already there are a number of territorial officers in camp or on leave who have not been posted to units, for tho leason that there are no units to which they can be posted. They were called up by a special order some time ago as officers, and it appears that they must remain officers until thoy are disposed of, or until they surrender their rank. If they had not been called up, but had been allowed to take their chances in the ballot as members of tho Expeditionary Forco Reserve, they would have had no claim for special consideration, and there would be no problem now as to how to deal with them. A problem now presents itself to the authorities. One solution has been attempted without result up till the present. The services of these officers have been o/fered to the Imperial authorities, but no replies have been received to the several cablegrams sent from New Zealand on the subject.
