The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Minister of Agriculture, has been invited by the Board of Governors of tho Ashburton High School,, to lay the foundation stone of an agricultural laboratory at Ashburton. Mr. Mac Donald leaves. Wellington on Monday night, and will perform the ceremony on Tuesday, returning to Wellington on Wednesday morning. Mr. Hugh Beethnm, of Brancepeth, is very seriously ill, and !iri operation may.be necessary. Mr. Ralph Beethani is expected to arrive in Auckland shortly. Mr. D. G. Macdougall, who is atpresent visiting. Wellington," has for tho last fifteen months been'publicity director of the Australian Y.M'.C.A. He is a well-known journalist, and before taking up his present duties had served on a number of metropolitan newspapers in the Commonwealth. With Mr. Macdougall in charge of publicity operations, the Australian Y.M.C.A. has been particularly successful in awakening public interest and sympathy and'obtaining, funds to support its activities on behalf of soldiers. Bird, M.A., late ; sonior inspector of Native schools, and- how senior inspector of schools in Hawke's Bay district, was on Wednesday -the recipient of a handsome token of esteem from the Native school teachers at present sitting in conferenco'in Auckland. The death occurred recently at Tauranga of Mr. A. C. H. Tovey-Tennant, at tho age of 84 years. Born at Montreal iii 1833, he entered the British Army, joining the _ 70th Kegiment and securing his commission at the age of ■18. In 1859 lie..married,.a'nd'left.almost immediately for . India. 'From India he'eame direct;fto'/N6w Zealand, arriving at Auckland in" the ship Daniel Rankin in 1861. He saw much active service in the Waikato and Taranaki districts. Ho went to Tauranga in 1867, and sold his commission in tho Army. 'Mr. Tovey-Tennant is survived by. his widow and four sons, and ono daughter, Messrs. A. M. and K. F. Tovey-Tennant, of OTiura, King' Country ; Mr. W. H. Tovev-Teiinanfc. of Oregon. U.S.A.; Mr, H.' D. Tovey-Tennant. of Blenheim, and Mrs. Chamberlain, of Wellington.

Tho marked personal esteem in which the'late Mr. David Anderson, of Hankey Street, was held, was shown at his funeraj yesterday, which was very largely' attended by prominent and representative citizens. • Tho chief mourners were the sons of the deceased, Messrs. Yesterday afternoon the delegates to tho New Zealand Educational Institute's conference presented; Mr. E. U.. Just with a silver salver in recognition of his services as treasurer of tho institute for eight years.

Captain James Evans, who has been awarded the Military Gross, is a sou of' Mr. H. R. Evans, at presont with New Zealand Forces on homo sorvice. Before enlisting, Captain Evans was a member of- the staff of Ross and Glendining, and took a' prominent part in Wellington sports. Ho was a member I of the Oriental Football-Club, and was I hapditjapper for-the-Swifts and Wellington Swimming Clubs. He left as 2nd lieutenant with-the.mounted section of tho Sixth Reinforcements, and for five months was adjutant at.Zeitbun Camp. Afterwards ho rejoined tlte brigade, and served through tlio fightnig in Egypt up to the time, of ..tho Palestino operations. For this he was promoted to lieutenant, and mentioned in dispatches. After a year and- nino , months he was recalled to England and given his captaincy with the infantry, I being attached to the Auckland Battalion. With the Aucklauders Captain Evans fought in . France, and in the Passcliendaelo fighting was "gassed." On last advices lie was in Brbckcnliurst Hospital, but liad made a good recovery and expected.soon to. return to France. ■"'■■■■-.-
