There 'ire frequently "eleventh-hour" calls, which have to be. answered at once. There is no time to reason why, and such calls usually fall upon the Mayor's committee. For the last two occasions this committee has had to supply instruments to make up a little orchestra on board for the departing reinforcement. In tho case of a recent reinforcement there happened to be among its members some very skilful players, and the usual demand for instruments 011 which they could practise their art was made before the vessels sailed.
