THE JEWEL ROBBERY AT TAUMARUNUI
POLICE ON A HOT SCENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Taumarunui, January 3. Tho police have been following up a clue, to the burglary that was committed here on Christmas morning, when £300 worth of jewellery was stolen from the safe of Frankland and Hart Brothers, where it had been placed for safe keeping by William Wallen, the adjoining shopkeeper. Mr. Frankland liad fortunately removed his takings of £300 from the safe the previous night, and remombers that after the time of tho burglary his bedroom door in the hot-el was tried by someone, but found looked. The burglars evidently were looking for money, and expected to find it in tho safe. Mr. Frankland had foolishly made it known in town that lie had a good sum of money on hand, and was staying home for tho holidays to protect It. . Dotective Cooncy and Sergeant Miller, after a search of tho Wanganui River bed near the tennis courts, discovered ;i tin box, which contained the jewellery when it was stolen, and also found a sack that had been used to carry tlio haul away. The tin and the sack woro both damaged by explosions in the safe. Twenty chains from the first find a cardboard holder and £lo worth of jcwellory were discovered. Further developments aro expected shortly.
