OVERSEA FREIGHTS

BIG INCREASES ANNOUNCED THE NEW RATES It was announced a few days ago that the Imperial Government had decided to increase freights on produce conveyed from New Zealand. The new rates, which came into operation on January 1, are as follow, the old freights, as fixed on October 1, 1916, being given for purposes of comparison : —

The increases, which are formidable from the point of view of shippors, have 'been made at the direction of the Imperial Government, whicli has requisitioned all tonnage. The shipping companies are paid on a "blue bo&k" or fixed rate, ana it docs not f.ppoar that they participate in the increases. The effect of t'na increases, as far aa the New Zoaland producers aro concerned, are minimised by the faot that the bulk of the produce is bought by the Imperial Government on an f.o.b. basis. The freight on meat, wool, nwj dairy produce is no concern of the producers. The increases will be felt severely, however, by exporters tl flax, tallow, kauri gum, and some othei lines.
