Tiie quests come down to breakfast, -which consists of "two hot cups of naturetea and saccharin and two slices of miserable war bread smeared with the comforting view of the mountains and a small quantity of coloured stuff, which is said to answer to the name of marmalade." Enter four "beautiful and elegant women, 1 ' followed by a lady's maid bearing a large oake, two sausages, and two boiled eggs for each of the party, and also "a quite roal and actual pound of butter." There are imitterings of "food hogs" and angry discoveries that the party has brought its own food from a neighbouring country house. _An elderly Prussian official bangs his fist upon tho table and says: "Go and fetch the police. They are eating three times their weekly ration. You are thieves, who are feeding on what belongs to the State, and eating up our butter and our meat." A young Prussian officer pushes away his plate, and says loudly: "111-mannered crew. Not a traco of tact and upbringing. If they had tho slightest idea of good manners they would at least not have their food served in this room. I am not talking of the injustice but only of the tact." At last the indignant spectators leave the room, "with nothing inside them but a sense of their tact and good upbringing."
