Thomson. A SWIMMING RECORD. On Monday last John E. Banks, one of the Institute members, made an attempt to lower the long-distance 6wimming record for the public tepid baths, which was. previously held by W. Hawke, who swam two miles 700 yards. John E. Banks succeeded in lowering tho Tecord by swimming 3 miles 100 yards. Banks is a boy of U years of age, and is to bo commended on his meritorious performance. He covdrcd the distance in 2 hours 35 minutes. LIFE-SAVING. On Friday evening Mr. A. A. Som'merville, of the Eoyal Life Saving Society, examined a number of institute members in life-saving, with the following results :— Winners of Elementary Certificates.— Wallace D. Sykes, Percy N.
