Minister- of Dofcnco (Sir James lAiien) to tho chairman and members oF tho Soldiers' Fnancial Assistanco •Board:—--•"Dear Sir,—Tho close of tlio i-iesent year completes-the. first, twelve months' administration of the Military Service Act._ The introduction of compulsory service has been a momentous event in tho history of our Dominion, a;.d the fact that the Military Service A''i has been brought into operation .vitli such remarkable smoothness has reen tho cause for, much thankfulness. 1 am sure' that the work of the Soldiers' Financial Assistance Board lias helped very materially to achieve this result, anti I desire therefore to take advantage of the opportunity of sxpressing to you iny appreciation of the very valuable services which have been rendered by your board. ' I'leasc .-■ccopt yourself and convey to your feliowmembcrs and also to your officers my sincere thanks for the help that one and all have given during this trying period.—Yours faithfully, J. Allen." The work done by the board is of a pm dy honorary description, and some idea of the, work involved may l-e gathered from the fact that since Apiil 10 last it has held no fewer than 178 meetings, frequently lasting until a very! late hour at night. The board consists of the following Messrs. T. S. Konaldson, Assistant Public Trustee (chairman); C. TP. Chilman, formerly manager of the To Aro branch ii the Bank of Now Zealand ' (deputy-chair-man) ; W. E. Bethmie, head of tl-fc firm •of Messrs. J. 11. Betluine and Co.; M. J. Kiigour, formerly Assistant Land Registrar and Registrar of Deeds; and T. formerly of the ihm of Messrs: Hutcheson and Wilson.
