PRICE OF BUTTER
NO INCREASE PROBABLE.
It has been reported recently that there was a likelihood of tho local retail prico of butter being increased owing to tho relatively high price now paid for export butter under the Imperial purchase scheme. A Dominion reporter who made some inquiries on this point gathered that the present maximum retail price, Is. Bd. por lb., will not be increased. Tho Government wiU be prepared, if the occasion arises, to take such action as will prevent an additional burden being placed on tho local consumers.
The present position is that tho exporters are paid 1575. a cwt., or nearly Is. sd. a lb., for their butter, and they are to receive in addition half of the profit made by the Imperial Government on the salo of the butter m tho ■United Kingdom. This means a to.al return of probably not less J tan Is. 7<l. a lb., and if the factory car. obtain this price, tho local consumer, under tho present By stem, would te expected to pay about Is. 10d. a lb. It has been suggested that the retention of tho present maximum rrice may bring about a shortage of supplies lor local consumption. The merchants have mado tations to the Government en _ ino point, but tho reply has been, it is understood, that the local price must not bo increased. This is inferred to mean that tho Government is prepared if necessary to include supplies for local consumption in the requisition scheme.
