LOVE AND ONIONS
She was 6lowly peeling something Which ho did not recognise, With a tin dish set before her And a soft light in her eyes, Like tho midnight moonlight failing Where tho shadowed water lies. She was peeling, without ceasing, And he longed to take her handJust one hand, he felt, would help to Make her fully understand She was all the' pearls of ocean ■ And the fairest flower on land. "Oh!" ho said, "if you'd stop pooling, There is something I would say, Ere this sunset wanes to 1 gloaming, AVith its host of shadows gray?' But she answered, "I'm so busy; Won't it do another day?" But this lover was determined. He had wo6ed her many weeks; Ho had iiought her at her window, As the ardent lover seeks— Even at the kitchen window, With its scent of boiling leeks. Through the casement wide, ho said it, And her, heart beat as sho peeled, For hia pleading would have snfteuud Any heart that wasn't steeled. (Even whalebone would have yielded To tho prospect ho revealed.) She would never have to worry Any more, this lover said. Ho would pour his lovn and treasure Over her devoted head. Erom tho harsh world he would shield her Even after he was dead. Did she love him much? She .icemed to. . . . In her brown eyes' golden glow There wcro silver gleams of brightness, As when showers of. spring-time go, And the sunlight comes like laughter, And the shining breezes blow. Ah! at lost this heedless lover Saw tho (car-drops in her eye. "Have I hurl you?" Deep his anguish, Till ho heard her calm reply, "Can't you see I'm peeling onions? Onions alwajs mako mo cry!" —Will Lawsoii.
