HUNTLY SHOOTING CASE
A LIGHT SENTENCE. By Telegraph—Priss Association. Hamilton, December 14. At the Supremo Court William Alfai Harry was charged with the attempted murder of David Kernohan, by snooting him with a shotgun. Both Men were miners at Huntly. lternohan stated that Harry shot him in the right shoulder after a friendly conversation, and without provocation. *He admitted in. crossexamination that ilrs. Harry had visit' <sd him at the hospital three times a Stveek since'the shooting. Constable Farr, of Huntly, staled that accused gave himself up, stating Wiat ho shot Kernohan, and alleging that Kernohan had violated his wife. Accused gave evidenco that he had been married six years. He picked (up the gun to shoot a troublesomo dog, when Kernohan rushed hiril, threatening to choke him, and the gun explode led; He could not remember pu ling the trigger or what happened afterVards. *He claimed that Kernohan load misbehaved with his wife. The jury returned a verdict of doing ■grievous bodily harm, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of the state of accused's mind and the 'extreme provocation received. His Honour passed sohtehce of eleven montlis' imprisonment, but said ho would Tecommend ths Government that prisoner be discharged at once, oii condition that he rejoined the military forces. ■ Prisoner had previously enlisted and had been accepted for service. His Honour agreed with the jury that prisoner had no intention of killing, and tliiU the shooting was unpremeditated.
