WAIRARAPA MEETING

DEVOTION WINS BIU HANDICAP. (B.y Telegraph—Snecial Correspondent.) Cartorton, December 13. The Wairarapa Racing Club's meeting was held to-day in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, including about 4000 soldiers. The totalisator handled £24,002. Only 10s. and £5 tickets were issued. There was a big field in the Trial Handicap, but the public were well on tho mark in their judgment. Exclusive finished up a better favourite than Blue Gown, while Chimera carried most support of the remainder. At the start Justification, on the rails, jumped back and lost a lot of ground. Ohiraera was early in the lead, and followed by Exclusive, Benope, and Blue Gown, she led into the straight. Exclusive challenged strongly in the run homo, but tho Finland filly held her own and won oomfortably from Exclusive, with Momac, Blue Gown, and Benope right up. A lot of interest centred in the appearance of Hymestra, who started a hot favourite in the Tuhitarata Handicap. In the birdcage he was voted a bit light on tlio flank, but his quarters were well muscled up. He was on tho outside_ at the barrier, and Blairflndc led him into tho straight, but then tho favourite was shakon up and ho soon had the race in safe keeping. Comment just beat Black Ada for second place. The others were bunched.

Out of thirteen acceptors in tho Rimutaka Hack Handicap only five went to the post. Mystified was at a very 6hort price, and so waß Idyllic, but tho other trio wore neglected. At tho barrier rise the favourite took charge, but there was no pace for the first half mile. Here the whole of the runners wer« bunched, and the paco was clapped on. Tho favourite held his position and won cleverly by a couple of lengths from Arihia. Try Again was a length away third, and the other pair finished together. Devotion scored in the big _ handicap after a splendid race. The winner was nicely placed throughout, and taking charge in tho straight, sho won easily from Impediment, who had made all tho running. Mascot finished third, but at no stage did she look like winning. Black Hill ran well for a mile, but then faded out of it. Centre was prominent early but he failed to stay out the distance. The' winner incurs a penalty for the Jlanawatu Cup. She has now won tlireo times on end. Her win was very popular, and evoked rounds of applause from the big crowd present. Hymestra'e sister, Torfreda, had a big levee while being aaddled for the Nursery Handicap. She moved smartly in the preliminary and waa made a good favourite. At the barrier rise Cotillion and Damier were first away, and led into the straight. Over tho last bit Torferda finished fast and got up in timo to win by a head from Damier, while Cotillion was only a neck away. Missland finished fourth. The winner cost Mr. A. M'Donald, 800gns. _at the Karamu sale, but she looks like boing well worth tho money. She is engaged in the Juvenile Handicap at Awapuni, and will have to put up a 101b. penalty for her win to-day. Comment had' a very easy win in the I'ukio Hack Handicap, for wliicli übe was installed a good favourite. There was a tiresome delay at the barrier, and when it went up I'ervolo and Livlaud screwed round and lost a lot of ground. Association led from Comment and Bagdad to the turn, whore the favourite took charge and won easily, while Bagdad, ridden out, just' headed Wliakatina. Association was fourth.

A very hot order in Nanna r:'s beaten by a narrow margin in the Reynolds Handicap, seven furlongs. She drew the outBide, but soon reached the front and led into tho straight from Probation and SarOver the last fifty yards Glorify came fast, and got up in time to win by a head. Probation was a neck .yay third, and Sardinia fourth. Y. Lee. rider of the favourite, lost ono of his irons on the trip. For the concluding event, which was run an hour behind scheduled time, The Golfer, Consultation and To Opai were evenly baoked. The raco went to Momac. lij- Triosrnph—Proßs Association.
