('Continued from page 2.). wham/dallah flower show FINE DISPLAY OP SUMMER BLOOMS. Yesterday afternoon..a very successful flower show was opened in the Town; Hall, Khandallah, by Mr. B. A. ■Wrifjhb, M.P. There was a very good attendance of the ' public, and it is hop;id that a very satisfactory sum iiiaji be handed to the patriotic funds. Well-known horticulturists, both in the surrounding districts and in the city, haid sent in exhibits, and the display of blooms in the Town Hall was - extremely fine.. Among these exhibitors •were Messrs. C. H. Izard; H. A. Fox, G;. Holder, Shailer (Palmerston North), I'. Waugh (Lower Hutt), and F. WestTjftiry. The judges were Mr. F. Waugh, floral exhibits; Mr. James Godber, the : Jaome industries; and Miss Cooper, the
decorative sections. Eoses held pride of place at the show, and although the hot weather had made itself felt l:y them, it had not prevented some very good blooms from being shown. Mr. Hirschberg and Mr. Penn were the chief prize-winners in the open section, and Mr. 11. M. Porteous in the novice class. Mr. Hirschberg was the winner of the points prize. Mrs. F. K. Porteous showed the champion rose, "Mrs. J. H. Welch." Sweet peas and other cut flowers made a brilliant show, and in sweet peas Major Addington, Mr. 0. H. Izard, and Mr. F. Westbury wcro all prize-winners. In the open section for sweet peas Mrs. W. J. Summers was the winner, and Mr. W. Hutching in the novice section. The champion vase, "Henry Ohn," was exhibited by Major Addington, and in addition Mr. G. Holder had sent in one of those displays for exhibition for which he has become so noted. For exhibition only were some fine carnations sent in by Mr, H. A. Fox. In the open section (carnations), Mr. F. E. Porteous took the 'first prize and championship with "Linkman." Other prize-winners were Messrs. H. F. Gray and F. W. Bradshaw. In the novico
j classes Mr.' J. P. Mackay was the win- ) ner of the points prize, and Mr. W. ; Hutchings also took a first. In pansies, ! 'Mr. F. K. Porteous again scored, and . Miss Jean Daniells won in violas. In ! pelargoniums, Mrs* H. Taylor won first i prize; in gladioli, Mr. F. K. Porteous i was awarded first prize. Mrs. Batham • scored with a display of seasonable ■ vegetables, and Mrs. "Willis and Mrs. . Ahearn also took first prizes for gooso--1 berries. I In the ladies' decorative classes, Mrs. . Batham won with cut flowers. Mrs. i 11. F. Gray was a prize-winner for buttonholes, also Miss Penn (Otaki) for one i containing a rose. The* decorative ; tables had not been decided. Mr. J. H. Plimmer was awarded the championship for a gloriouß display of cut flowers, and Mr. F. Wostbury was again awarded the championship for > his display of vegetables. Throughout the show competition was keen, competitors coming from as far north as Otaki. The home industries made a vory interesting display indeed, and its merits were stressed by Mr. Wright in his opening remarks, especially the work of the girls under 16 ' years of age. Mrs. H. S. Houston took the points prize in this section, and was closely followed by Mrs. Waldic, Other first prize-winners were Mesdames I). Macklin, France. C. Monro. Burgo, Heavs, and Misses D. Meek and E. and J. Chapman. Miss ,Waldie was the chief prize-winner in the girls' section. Fine displays df cut flowers wore rondo by Mr. F. Wangh (Lower Hutt) and Mr. Shailer (Palmerston North). n feature being "jfadame Edouard Heriott" in all her glory. Cawley's orchestra provided music that was greatlv appreciated. Sir. H. Abraham was the honorary secretary. There was a large attendance of soldiers at the weekly dance, which was held in the Sydney Street Soldiers' Club last evening, so many in fact that girls were distinctly in the minority. The hostesses in the tea-room were the ladies of St. 'John Ambulance (Mrs. Moorhouse in charge), and they had a busy time supplying the needs of the soldiers. The usual arrangements in connection with the dancing were carried out, and a very pleasant evening resulted. Before the dance concluded, Mrs. C. Earle announced that owing to the fact that a large number of the soldiers would be away on-leave, the next dance would not take place until the second week in January. Mrs. M. 0. Larnach has been appointed by the Hawke's .Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to the position of masseuse at the Napier Hospital. There were four applications. The Camp Commandant at Featherston acknowledges with thanks the receipt of three cases of literature from tile Manawatu Patriotic Society. This reading matter has been distributed amongst the institutes in camp. For the hospitals:—From Mrs. N. P. Adams, Featberston, flowers; from Mrs. J." Martin, Martinborough, flowers, eggs, cakes,, and lettuce; from Mrs. W. J. Martin, Martinborough, flowers, eggs, calces, and lettuce; Pahiatua_ Ladies' Patriotic Committee, eggs, jellies, cornflour,_and cakes; AVomen's Patriotic Committee, New Plymouth, figs, chocolates, toothbrushes, face-washers, linen, pyjama girdles, wine; N.Z.D.C., flowers; hostesses of Anzac Club, Featherston (per Mrs. W.
