SOLDIERS' ALLOWANCES

At a meeting of tho executive of the New Zealand llctumcd Soldiers' Association the following resolution was unanimously adopted:—"That this executive is of the opinion tha,t retrospective allowances, based upon the new scale to come into operation on January 1, 191S, should be made retrospective to the date of the soldier's enlistment to the' wives aiid children of all married soldiers, whether still on active service or discharged." Referring to this resolution, tho general secretary stated that by agreeing to increase thp scale of allowances, tho Government had' admitted its inadequacy. A number of married men left New Zealand in the early stages of tho war, and many of these placed tlio service of their country before all other considerations. Owing to the fact that their dependants had not insisted upon tho inadequacy of tho separation allowance, they had suffered in silence. In response to tho, pressure exerted by tho Second Division Leaguo tlio Government had introduced a new • scale framed to meet tho demands of the Second Division League, and becoming operative at a date prior to tho entry of members of tho Second Division into camp." Nobody grudged -tho Second Division the fact that they should have succeeded in obtaining a largo measure of their desires, hut tfte action of the Government in deelining to recognise tho claims on a retrospective basis of married inon who had served and had been discharged was deeply resented by returned soldiers throughout New Zealand. The Association decided to take whatever steps were necessary to secure justice for the men discharged, and 'for those still ,lt tho front who were not able to mnlce their influence felt in support of their claims.
