A fact which clearly : shows the existence at times of a dangerous set is that on eight different occasions vessels hare stru* or touched tjio I south mole when entering or leaving the i harbour, and yet. wo know of only ono I occasion on which trouble has occurred ut. i the north mole. We merely wish to draw your attention to these facts, bo that you intent give them your consideration, and perhans be fortunate enough to find a remedy tn lessen this danger to master ma.riners." The chairman of th<! board (Mr. A. r<. ■Ricncll), i»t tho mooting on Friday, sairt the nn/utical inouirios reri; lir-'d by certificated men, and the Court had laid it down that it was satisfied there was no set. Of course, when the wind blew it had a tendency to make the sea go in one direction, and if they called that a set, there was one. The non-etlstence.. 01 set
could bo proved by elauding at the pilot Btation, wlieu it would uo seen that the current wont straight out to eea, suid was clearly denncil. it wus stated that Mr. Napier Hell went into tho matter, and floated submerged keroaono tins out of the river, and uccordingr to hie report there wae a set from north to south, which wna occasioned by .abnormal conditions. Tho eet reached three knots. The set was for nino months of the year, inoro or Ices. If a lieJjing-line were thrown out, it would' show that them was a drug from north to south. At the ftmo ot Mr. Bell's report tho entrance turned straight to tho south. Mr. Veitch said if tho set exleted it was not shown on tho chart. Tho proper thing to do was to refer tho matter to the Marino Department. Mr. KobinaoD: If the masters consider there is a set, the owners will, too, and tho sooner wo recogniso it tho better. The chairman: We should not recognise it before it is proved. ■ Mr. Williams said ho was surprised at tho officers writing in the Btrain they did. It must have been apparent that local conditions were nothing like as difficult as at Tory Channel and French Pass. Hβ had helped to sweep a schooner out between the moles, and he knew something of the conditions. The littoral drift was north on the flood, and eonlh on the ebb, but there was nothing to aflect a steamer with power. Master mariners would make provision for it, also the pilot. The letter was tantamount to a reflection of the hoard, and likely to damage the port. The proportion of vessels wrecked at wanganui and Wellington during tho past forty years was about the same. Mr. J. B. Murray referred to the great number of times Captains Hlntyre and Connor had worked the port. Neither had experienced difficulty. The freeing works lighters frequently worked the bar in very light trim, drawing a, ittle over thrco feet. The men frequenting tho port mort were satisfied there was no set except the normal set outside from north to south about nino months of tho year. • The board decided to forward the letter to the Marine Department without comment.
