CHESS

TVELLINGTON CLUB V. WORKING MEN'S CLUB.

Tho above match, in which the pairing was done in advance, and a fortnight was allowed for the playing of the fixtures, was concluded on Saturday evening.— The two captains, W. E. Mason and Barnes, adjudicated on a couple of unfinished games (Godtschalk v. Wild, and Chapman v. Hicks), the final score being: Wellington Club, 17 wine; Working Men's Club, 11 _ wins. The losers (who ■ had the services of the three players that belong to both clubs) more than held their own at the higher boards, but the Wellington Club (who were minus the services of Still and Barraud) proved too strong in the "body and tail" of the match. Tho records of the .two clubs, which are probably incomplete, go to show that the Wellington Club has won on twelve occasions, viz., in 1889 (twice), 1891, 1892, 1893, 1896, 1897. 1898 (twice), thfi Working Men's Club won in 1901 (November), and in 1904.' ■ No matches were played between ■ 1904 and 1917, mainly owing to the Working Men's Club losing several strong players in 1905. It will he noticed that it took the Working Men's Club's representatives a dozen years to find the turn in a long lane of adversity, but this was only to be expected seeing that in those days the Wellington Club was widely regarded as having the strongest team in New Zealand. The scores of the present match are as follow.— Wellington Club. Working Men's Club.
