LATE MR. A. S. BISS
THE FINAL OBSEQUIES,
The profound respect and affection in which the late Mr. A. S. Hiss was held in Wellington was shown yesterday, when his remains were followed to the graveside at Karori by the longest cortege seen here for a long time past. Some forty motor-cars streamed over tho hill to the cemetery under tho broom-blazed hills of Karori, and beside those who motored out thero wero many friends of tile deceased who went ouv by tramcar, the assemblage at the graveside numbering between three and four hundred people. The chief mourners -were: Mr. Leslie Biss (son) and Mr. C. H. 1 Biss (brother of the deceased), other related mourners including Messrs. Arthur, William, and John Martin, Colonel J. G. Hughes, and Mr. Eobert O'Connor. The pall-bearers wore Messrs. S. Seymour (secretary New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association), T. Bohlson (secretary of the local Returned Soldiers' Association), J. T. Fox (manager Soldiers' Club), and G. Gray (secretary of the Wellington Clubhouse}. There were also present the deceased's fellowmembers of the Returned Soldiers' Clubhouse Committee, Messrs. James Alacintosh, Alexander Gray, M. Marks, and C. R. Smith. The City Council honoured the late ex-Councillor Biss by a large representation, including the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G.),' Councillors J. Godber, G. Frost, W. H. Bennett, C. B. Norwood , , J. E. Fitzgerald, W. H. P. Barber, and M. F. Cuckie, the City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton), and Town Clerk (Mr. John It. Palmer).
The Government was represented by the 'Hon. A. L. Herdman, with Mr. Frank Thompson (secretary to the Prime Minister). Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., was also present. There was a numerous representation of the legal ■profession, including the officials of the Wellington Law Society, and most of the insurance companies were represented by their managers. The members of the medical profession present included Colonel \V. E. Collins, Major W. Kington Fyffe, Drs. Herbert, Gilmer, and Cahill, whilst the members of the AVellesley Club (of which the deceased was a popular member) and the Star Boating Club (of which Mr. Biss was vice-president at his death) were present in force. The cortego also included a large number of Loago Wellington (Freemasons), of which the deceased Was a member.
The military element had its representatives in Major A. A. Oorrigan and several fellow-officers who were associated with the deceased in connection with the old Wellington Naval Artillery Volunteers. The Jewish community had its deputy in the ißev. H. van Staveren, and Captain Hall-Thompson (Government Naval Adviser) was represented by Lieutenant-Commander Keily. Mr. B. W. Hunt, secretary of the New Zealand Accountants', Institute, was present, with other members and cxmembers of the council of that body.
Tlie service at the graveside was lead by tho Rev. A. M. Johnson, vicar of St. Paul's, who, at the conclusion of the Anglican service, conducted the Masonic service in abbreviated form.
Wreaths of extreme beauty wore officially sent by the Johii Burns Company, the , directors and staff of the Bristol and Dominions Producers' Association, . Ltd., Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association, Wellington Returned Soldiers' Clubhouse Society, Wellesley Club, tho directors of the New Zealand Investment, Mortgage, and Deposit Company, Ltd., the Northern Assurance Company, manager and stafi of Dalgoty and' Company, New Zealand Society of. Accountants, proprietors of the "Evening Pout, members of the Old Navals Rifle Club, and officers and members of the Star Boating Cluh.
