ANNUAL REPORT.

At the concert given in the Grand Opera Houso by the boys of tho Marist Brothers' School, Newtown, last evening, the Rev. Bro. Egbert read the annual report. : The year 1917, the report pointed out, marks tho hundredth anniversary of tho founding of tho Marist Brothers and the forty-Tirst of the founding of the Bchool.

The school.roll this year has reached 326 (a record), and of these 127 have gained the certificate "excellent" for conduct, 88 "very good." and noarly all the remainder "good." Upwards oi 600 o)d boys have volunteered for Bervico in the war. Many distinctions, including a Victoria Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medals, and Military Crosses' have been won, but unfortunately, many have lost their lives. To the parents and friends of the killed and wounded deep sympathy is. oxtended; Though the Government standard for the proficiency cortificato has been raised, the inspectors awarded thirty-two proficiency certificates. Every one of the thirty-four boys in the clase was .presented. . In the other classes also very good work has been ' done.. The head teacher examinosall the claeses monthly; and every boy who shows by his work in these monthly tests that' ho is capable of following. the work of a higher standard is promoted. Besides the regular school singing, two ohuroh choirs are maintained, one at St. Joseph's and another at St. Anne's. The boys' band has gained the thanks of. all for its assistance at church, charitable, and patriotic func-' tions. . Next year it is hoped to start a |6chool orchestra. Instruction is given in. the laws of health, Jind daily practice in exercises which have for their object the' development of the whole body. • With the assistance of the old boys, facilities are provided for all boys in Standards 111 to VI to take part m games of cricket: or football on Saturday afternoons. Every boy is also encouraged to attend the.classes in swimming and :lifo-saving, held at the Tβ Aro Baths oh Tuesdays and Fridays

from 4 to 5. ' ' . Thanks to the many friends of Catholic education, particularly to two distinguished old boys, one of whom.gave £250, and another £300, tp tho fund which was inaugurated by ...them for the. building of a Marist .Brothers' training' college, has now-reached ths very satisfactory sum of '. £1023. and if another £196 can bo collected before December 16,. the first-mentioned old ,boy will give a further £100. The building,' which will be entirely for those joining the Brotherhood, ' mil be commenced shortly on a site yet to

be chosen. . The Brothers and boys tender their sincere thanks to Their Graces the Archhiahops, tho clergy, the Wellington Catholic Education Board, St. Joseph's Parish School Committee, the parents, the Marist ' Brothere , Old Boys' Association, and the donors of prizes for their constant and helpful interest in the work of tlio school. _. The three chief prize-winners _ this year are: Rood conduct (Archbishop O'Shcft'e gold medal), John Miley; .Ecliolarship. religious and secular studies (gold medal, presented by the old boys), Clifford Korshaw; hest allround sport (Dr. Mackin's gold medal), Joseph Burke. The names of those three hoys will he pieced on the honours Banner, and all the prizes will he presented after tho' final examination next weok.• V " . .
