THE C 2 MEN

PROGRESS OF RE-EXAMINATION

BIG PROPORTION FOR CAMP

Official returns show that up to the end of November 2457 First Division balloted mon, originally classed as C 2, had been re-examined by the special Medical Board. Of these men 1428 received orders to proceed to camp, 264 being classed as "A" (fit for_ active service), 48 as "Bl" (fit .for active service after medical, surgical, or dental treatment), and 1116 as '-Cl'/ (likely to become'fit for active service after i special training). The remainder of the men re-examined were left in the hi croup (fit for ilomo service only) or reclassified as "D" (permanently unfit for military duty). The C 2 men called up tor re-examin-ation up t« the present time were all drawn in the first six ballots, and it is expected that other men from the same ballots will occupy the Medical Board until the end of tins month. Then in January a start will be made with the re-examination of C 2 men drawn in the later ballots and of voluntary recruits. Notices to C 2 men drawn after the sixth ballot are. now being sent out. The authorities are also sending <mt notices to men who have been definitely set aside as unfit, but this work is likely to proceed slowly. It seems likely that the combing over of the C 2 men drawn in the first six ballots will produce altogether about 1800 men fit for camp, of whom probably not fewer than 1200 will eventually bo declared fit for active service. In' a similar ratio the C 2 men of the later First Division ballots may produce in the neighbourhood of 2000 fit men. These figures represent rough calculations only.' and are not to be taken as final. They indicate that the re-oxa initiation of the C' 2 men is going to assist substantially in maintaining the supply of recruits for the reinforcements.
