PRODUCTION POINTERS

At the end of a recently published bulletin, "Feeding Dairy Cattle," Mr. A. C. M'Candlish, 'of lowa, gives the following suggestions, which he terms "Production Pointers" :— 1. High producing cows are tho basis of profitable dairying; the most economical results can not bo obtained with poor producers. 2. A good sire will rapidly grade up a herd for high production; any purebred siro will not do—he must bo able to transmit • producing ability to his offspring, 3. The caro given to dairy heifers will determino to a great extent the profits they, will make when thoy join tho milking herd. 4. A good cow will respond to good treatment and even a poor cow will increase in production if sho is properly handled. 5. Without liberal feeding, liberal returns can not be obtained. A heavy producing cow can not do her 'best work unless sho 16 well fed.

• 6. Tho milk eoales and tho Babcock tester separate tho goctl cows from the poor cows.

Tho shortage of steel makes it more and more difficult for dairymen to obtain sufficient milk-cans. A. J. Parlon, Dairy Engineer, Pembroke Street, Carterton, states that he has a small supply of steel—probably the last obtainable this seanson, and can accoptorders for a limited number of cans. So it is wiseto order immediatelly — Advt.
