TO-DAY'S BALLOT

MARRIED MEN'S APPEALS.

The thirteenth ballot under the Military Service ,Act -will be drawn to-day by the Government Statistician (Mr. Malcolm Fraser). This ballot is to provide men for the draft that will be mobilised early in April. About 5000 names are to be drawn from tho roll of Class A of tho Second' Division, leaving 6ome 5000 reservists in this class to bo called iip en bloc later. The names of the men drawn in to-day h ballot will be published on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. The appeals received by the Director of Recruiting in connection with tho first Second Division ballot, taken last month, represent about 25 per cent, of tho 5000 Class A men drawn. _ # It appears, therefore, that the remaining 75 per cent, of the married men affected by this ballot are ready to take their chance of being passed as fit without asking the military • servioe boards _ for relief. The proportion varies in different parts of the country. It is stated, for example, that in Canterbury about 50 per cent, of the men have lodged appeals. The medical examination of the first bateh of married balloted men has been proceeding lately, and the results are . stated to be fairly satisfactory. _ The proportion of fit men is Tather higher than had been expected.
