PERMITTING SHOUTING

At the-'Petone Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy; S.M., Daniel Prendeville, barman at the Central Hotel, Petone, was charged with permitting "shouting." Inspector Marsack conducted the prosecution. Evidence was given by Constables Cochrane and Phillips that while in the Central Hotel on Ootober 10 they heard a man invite ■ another to have a drink, and saw a half-crown teudored in payment and Is. 6d. change returned. The man treated returned the "shout,"_ and put down a two-shilling \jiece, receiving Is. change. Mr. J. A: Scott, counsel for Prendeville, said the defence was a denial that any "shouting" had taken place. Defendant had been warned of the constable's visit, and he suspected them when they entered tho hotel. It money in excoss of the price of the drink had'been paid, it probably was in pavment of accounts previously incurred. It was a common practice to "chalk-up" drinks. The defendant in evidence said he remembered a man who was standing near the constables tender a half-crown, but stated that he gave 2b. 3d. in change. After further evidence had been heard the Magistrate inflicted a fine of £10, with costs. . Francis G. Warring, licensoe of the hotel, who was similarly charged, and who did not appear, and was undefended, was fined £25 and costs.
