A NEW ANAESTHETIC
Remarkable result* are being obtained (savs the London News Agency) at the First London General Hospital, Camberwell, from the use of a new anaesthetic, consisting of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) combined with oxygen and, if necessary, ether It is predicted that as its advantages become more widely appreciated it will eventually supersede chloroform In the vast majority of operations. - "The two chief points in its favour, said an authority recently, "are the rapidity with which the patiunt, returns to consciousness and the obviating of the unplensont taste which chloroform entails both in its administration and aftereffect'! On tho other hand, it cannot be used in all cases. Tt is more expensive than chloroform, and it requires a special apparatus. Although the idea is not new to medical science, Ibis form oC anaesthetic having been in use in America for several years, this is the first time it has .been used on any large scale in this country."
