FOR A JUNIOR CLERK.

At last evening's meeting of the City Council the following report of the Finance Coroniitteo was received and adopted :- "The Committee have to report that tho Government Treasury has deducted the sura of .£261 Gs. Sd. from the Government subsidy on rates to cover the Audit Department's charge for the 1915-16 audit. Tho council objected to the charge of ,£7O for the services of the Audit Inspector's junior, calculated at the rate of ,£1 per day, considering tho charge too high. Tho Auditor and Controller-General has refused to reduce the amount, and the committee recommend that the council express the attitude adopted by the Auditor-General in this niattor."

In moving the above motion the Mayor said that the charge of XI a day was for a junior who had assisted tho Government auditor who had been auditing the City Corporation's a'ceounte He thought the council was justified in protesting against tho charge. Ho said that £1 a day was altogether too stiff a charge for a junior—ho felt they should protest against saddling tho council with such a high fee for clerical work. Councillor M. F. Luckio thought that it was absolutely improper on the part of a Government Department to chargethree times what was paid for such services. ' ..,',. Councillor R. A. Wright referred to tho manifest injustice of tho charge. He thought if the matter wero taken before a magistrate the Government would lose it. Could thev not stop tho payment? The Mayor said it could be _dono through tho executive of the Municipal Association. He assured the council that every possible method of protest would bo exorted in the matter.
