WELLINGTON SHAKESPEARE CLUB
Tho annual reading competition .for pupils of secondary schools for prizes given by the Wellington Shakespearo Club was held at the Technical School, Morcer Street, on Saturday morning. Twelve competitors—ten girls and two bnys—representing six schools, presented themselves, with tho following result The prize for boys was .gained by L. A. i'iddeli, of Wellington College, with 77 marks; the only other competitor, .r. F. Zohrab, also of Wellington College, running him very close with 7(1 marks. Tho pri/.e for girls was won by Alison Grant, of Wellington Girls' College, with 86 marks, tho next in order of merit being Kathleen Wilhy, of Fitzherbert Terrace School, 81 marks; Maud Duthie, of Chilton House School, 77 marks; and .loan Tully, Fitzharbert. Terrace School, 7G marks.' Miss Grant's rendering of "Quoen Catherine's Defence," (Henry VT.II) was exceptionally good, and considered bv the judges worthy of special mention." Good and intelligent, work was shown by many of the candidates, but the readings, taken generally, were not; quite up to the standard of those m previous years.
Six large cases of tinned and potted foods—beef extract, condensed milk, coffee, and milk cocoa, etc., etc., were sent awav last week'from the depot of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas and Red Cross Society en route for Egypt. Several other cases destined for France were also sent away.
