CITY'S MILK SUPPLY

PEJ3SENT POSITION. The position of the milk question in Wellington is naturally interesting all those engaged in the industry. One feature which is attracting some attention is the morging of several big vending businesses into one—the City Milk Company—which is conducting its business from the premises in Dixon Street formerly occupied: by the old Wellington Fresh Food and Ice Company. Tho latest vender to throw in his lot with the combination is Mr. George Nash, who has been prominently associated with tho inilk-distributing business in Wellington for many years. Whon seen on Saturday, the Mayor (Mr. ,T. P. Luke) said that the position at present was that good progress was being made with tho temporary milk clearing station at Thorndon, through which all milk for distribution in the city should pass. The newly-appointed milk manager (Mr. Oliver, of Christchuroh), who is at present visiting the North Island, would take charge of the whole undertaking on December 1. The council had called for tenders for a ■boiler and other essential plant for the station, and was securing two wagons— to be vised in transferrin® the milk fTom the railway stations to the milk depot. The important matter of taking over the distributing business would, tha Mayor stated, have to remain iu abeyance until a permanent clearing station could be erected, and ho anticipated that the council would not be able to manago that until after tho war.

Another important matter that was bein,? watched was the milk supply for the city. The fact that cheese factories were beiug established in the vicinity of Wellington, and the effeot they may havo on the supply, is not escaping the notice of those interested in the matter.
