EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, Messrs. T. Moss, J. Kebbell, E. H. Penny, G. Loudon, W. Allan, E. P. Kishwortb, A. AV. Hogg, B. A. Wright, M.P., T. Forsytli, and W. H. Field, M.P., were present at Hie monthly meeting of the Wellington Education board, held yesterday.
The statement of finances showed a credit balance of .£3lB Us. 10d. on September 21. The receipts for October and September amounted to .£15,641 19.9. 9d., and the payments amounted to .£13,739 13s. lid. The authorisations up to September 2(1 amounted to .£4505 10s. lid. An attached note stated that the amount of authorisation had been increased by .£'sßß 15s. by revision of the estimated cost of works at war prices. A letter was received from tho Department .of Education stating that it was unable io proceed with tbe erection of the main block of the Training College on account of the high cost of building. In regard to the question of the transference of children from kindergarten to public schools on attaioing the age of live years, it was, on the recommendation of tho secretary, decided that such transfers should only be made in June and December.
The Department also wrote saying that the supply of temperance cbarts was insufficient to fill the board's demands at present.
Surgeon-General Henderson wrote granting leave to Messrs. Trcmewan (Shannon) and Gaze (Maranui), of the hospital ship Marama's staff. It was reported that these teachers had resumed their duties.
A letter from the Department notified the board that the grant for a teacher's residence ot Saundevs Road (Wairarnpa) had been suspended. Mr. A. W. Hogg remarked that it was a single teacher school, and only a whnre was required. It was announced that the General Manager of Railways had finally declined to carry school children 'by a goods ' train between Woodsido and Featherston. The chairman announced I hat they would now have to make other arrangements. The board approved the change of date from December to February of the M.arlborough schools' patriotic fete. On the motion of Mr. Penny, it was decided that a sum of ,£2O be' paid the Tuumarina River Board in payment for tliiS slop-bank erected-at the roar of the school at Tuamariun. Mr. Penny remarked that the stop-bank had saved the board MO to -EM worth of damage during the past week.
