SMALL RECRUITS
ONE VERY SMALL BOY. It was suggested by Dr. Newman in the House of Representatives yesterday that the Defence Minister had unduly lowered the physical standard for recruits to be taken into camp. Some men of' few inches and little power were beinjr taken. ~ , , Sir James Allen: No, there ha/; been no lowering of standard,. Some timo ago the British lowered their standard, and we followed their example, but experience here proved that this reduction was not advisable, and we reverted to the lusher standard again. , Dr. Newman: Have you seen some or the recent recruits? Sir Jamte Allen: I am afraid I have "dV. Newman: You will be interested when you do, . Mr. Wilford: H.vw> you seen that little four feet-seven boy f ; . Sir James Allen: Five feet two inches is the minimum. ■ Mr Wilford: I know one who has been accepted who is 4ft. 7in., and he doesnt weigh five stone. He is a jockey boy in "Mr. Highden's" stables.
