OIL-WELLS IN BRITAIN
LOUD NORTHCLIFFE'S MISSION. The Government has taken all rights to bore for petroleum in Britain, bnt will lease out the work and give royalties to the landowners. Mr. Walter Long, introducing a. Bill for tho purpose 011 August 15, referred to our dependenco on imported oil, and said that Lord Northcliffe, who went to
the United States in connection with this very important oil question, had given him invaluable assistance. A committee has been advised that it is quite pro' Gable
that oil exists in parts of this country, but, being liquid, it moves under the surface, and therefore it is not easy of location.
The report that a valuable petroleum field has been discovered in the United Kingdom will explain Mr. Walter Long's Bill. The object is to prevent wild-eat schemes of exploitation and the waste of oil by unscientific methods of development.
