PROTEST MEETING AT OAMARU
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Oamaru, October 21. A mass meeting to protest against the inadequate allowances made to soldiers* dependants was held last night, and wae largely attended. The Second Division proposals were explained by Mr. A. E. Lawrence, chairman of the local executive of the league, and the Rev. Cyril 'looker. Mr. Lee, M.P., attended, and discussed pensions and allowances, and while supporting many of tho league's demands contended that the Government was faced with financial difficulties. A resolution, moved by Mr. James Bodman and seconded by Mr. Andrew Aitken, was carried unanimously—"That this meeting expresses its dissatisfaction with the inadequate scale of allowances to soldiers' dependants, and in their interests urges Cabinet to reconsider the question." Speakers voiced strong condemnation of the Prime Minister's statements that the Second Division men. were not playing the game, especially as the men were asking nothing for. themselves, but were demanding adequate allowances for their dependants.
