MAUDE'S VICTORY IN MESOPOTAMIA
HOST COMPLETE STROKE OP THE • WAR.
London, October 2. General Maude's victory is one of the most complete etrokos of the war. The Turks and Germans had been" massing round Aleppo many divisions, mostly Turkish, with a view to attacking General Maude at Bagdad or General Allehby at Gaza, or both. Falkenhayn is believed to have laid light railways iind arranged motor transport on an important scale. General Maude's victoiy was ;u finished piece of work. It is not easy lo surprise an army in its own territory, and not often done. One of the results is that the Turks nnisfc rally at ;i greater distance from Bagdad, at a- distance between the two river linus on which the Turks depend for supplies. The minor success gained simultaneously north-east of Bagdad shows that General Maude is holding off one body of the enemy while he demolishes another. It is first blood to Maude in the duel with Falkenhayn, and a most brilliant opening of Sthe winter campaign.—Renter.
