A number, however, resumed. The-Australian meat industry employees passed a motion urging the Federal Government to use its best endeavours to settle the dispute. The men contended that they had been locked out. Melbourne, September 24.—The brick yards were closed owing to shortage of coal, and hundreds were thrown idle. On the waterfront 10S3 volunteers wero engaged on-27 vessels. Over 20,000 men were still affected by the strike, including 8713 on strike. The application for the deregistration of the Waterside Workers' Federatidn was refused, Mr. Justice Higgius indicating that there wero other methods for dealing with the union. Sydney, September 21—The agreement between the Coal Lumpers' Union and the Naval authorities was cancelled, the refusal of the men to coal the transports being characterised by Mr. Justice lleydon as "the foulest disgrace." Sydney, September 25.—The registration of the Engine-drivers' Association of Australia was cancelled, and the preference clauses in any State awards also cancelled. The masters and engineers on tho ferry and river steamers of New South Wales decided to withdraw from tho Trades Council and Ihe Political Labour Union. A hospital ship was manned by volunteer firemen and seamen. Work on 27 vessels was carried out by 1175 volunteers. • ... Sydney. September 28.-A conterence between the coal Employees' Federation and the Government failed to reach unanimity, tho main point of disagreement being ihe Government's proposal to give (he mine managers power to use their discretion in.the selection of labour. It is estimated that 50,000 men are still idle including 10,000 miners. fiOOO seamen, ■1500 wharf workers. 2SOO meat industry employees, 2000 coal liimpers, IKOO locomotive engine-drivers. 1500 timber workers and 1500 labourers. Timothy M'Crislal president: of the Wharf Labourers' Union, and Ned Riley, were committed for trial for alleged seditious utterances. Melbourne, September 27.—After _ five weeks of idleness, the carters and driven* agreed to resume work on the employers' terms.'
