Appreciation from Sir Arthur Pearson, [ .Miss Dorothy Saunders, -whose pupils gave last year a. most delightful dance recital in aid of the Fresh Air Fund, has received a letter from Sir Arthur Pearson, the founder of the fund, in which lie. expresses the warmest appreciation of the efforts of the children and their teacher. "It was indeed ft surprise," he writes, "to receive your letter of January 4, enclosing as much as .£lO for the Fresh Air Fund. I had feared your removal from Clu'istchurch would deprive us of a warnwiiearted supporter, but it appears only to have changed yonr sphere of activity. I cannot thank you sufficiently, but I hope yon'will understand how sincerely grateful I am to you and your pupils for your generous assistance and for your assurance of continued interest in'our welfare. Owing to tho rise in food prices and difficultiess in regard to transit, it was found necessary last year to raise tho prica of the day outing to Is. and -the fortnight's holiday to 12s. Gd. But even at these rates you and your helpers,were the means of making 800 little ones supremely happy. I am most grateful to you all for your kindly and highly successful efforts on behalf of the hapless little ones of the slums, of the United Kingdom. Yours is war work in the fullest and highest sense. You are helping in.bringing light and hopo to many stricken and, comfortless homes, and in removing ono of tho sorest .reproaches of the nation. May you continue to appeal with continued success to the generous-hearted people of Wellington." Miss Saunders and her pupils will give another recital in aid of the Fresh Air Fund and the Blind Soldiers' Fund in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on November 15 and 17, when a. dance fantasia, written by a Wellington author, and supervised bv Mr. Tom Pollard, will be presented with m.iuy novel and beautiful effects. A "Gift-Coin" .Tea. A "gift-coin" tea, in aid of a bazaar to be held shortly in connection with St. Paul's parish, was held in the Sydney Street Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. In addition to contributions of money, flowers were' sold, and the stall, which was in charge of Mrs. Ynldwin and Mrs. Pnrrv,- was supplied with some beautiful flowers. In charge of the tenroom were Mrs. W. Blundell nnd Mrs. N. Burton, with assisting ladies.' During the afternoon two little pupils of Miss Beere's contributed dances, Miss Price sung, and' Mrs/A. Bircli contributed pianoforte solos. Several competitions were arranged, one being of a nature in which a considerable knowledge of Wellington was ren uired. Mrs. Kncwles received the "gift coins" t& the door. The Rev. A. M. Johnson and Mrs Johnson were among those who wore i-iiment. J
As a result of tbo production of "The Mogio Carpet" by Misa Gladys Campbell the net proceeds from the sale of tickets, (lowers, ami sweets ,amouiits to .£3BO Us., which sum has been handed over to the Countess of Liverpool's Trench Comforts Ji'imd Committee. In consequence of anunprecedented number of inquiries, and lo help a worthy cause, Miss Campbell will repeat "The Magic Carpet" on November 1 and 2 at the Grand Opera House. The proceeds will lie devoted to tile Blind Soldiers' and Sailors' Fund.

She has started caravans, equips them with necessaries ior lour girls each. When a farmer wants extra labour, snv for turnips, potatoes, or berrv picking, etc., he sends a horse lor a caravan to go to his farm, where the women lend a hand for some time; then another farmer sends for the van. am *> on, until the whole district has eot substantial help. The girls.make, their own food, and seem to thoroughly enjoy it all Some do forestry. .Many University and high school girls are away at 'this work during their vacations.

Both were heartily received. V unique exhibition of bodily development nnd muscular control was Riven by Mr. Matthew Alach. the Auckland YMC'.A. physical instructor, who is-vis-iting the city. Paddy's Market atvLowcr Hutt. Yesterday morning, in tlie Lyceum 'J'h eat re, Lower Hutt, "Paddy's Market" organised by tho Ladies' Patriotic Guild for tho benefit uf the Red Gross Appeii Day was opened, and from the start promised a most successful result in the way of proceeds. There was a great variety of stalls, which were burdened with largo supplies of goods of all kinds, and as fresh supplies continued to arrive during the day, no shortage was threatened. An added attraction comprised numbers of side-shows and tho l'etone. Municipal Band, and the Peione Eiavago Club contributed to an entertainment in the evening. Tho tallowing wera m charge of the various stalls:—Produce, Mosdamcs Barry, M'Laughlan, Treseder, find Miss Gordon; flowers, Mesdamcs Hayward, Chapman, and -Mr. D. Leo; needlework,' Mesdamcs Hansell, Levein, Ellis, and Hickson; jumble, Mesdames ,T. Fairbnirn and Nicholson and young lady assistants; cakes and siveots, MesJames Reeves and G. Pearee, and Miss Matthews; surprise, packets, Mrs. Eddy, Misses Trevethick and Knight; afternoon ten, Mesdames Cameron, Hall, M'Donald, Fraser, and young_ lady assistants; children's competitions, Mesdames Barker and Robinson and Misses Levein and M'laiighlan. The Old Girls of tho Hutt District High School spontaneously organised and conducted a cako and sweet stall, which deserved patronage, as did also the war curio ard art gallery conducted by Hisses Todd and M'Caw. Among the war curios were many interesting articles from Egypt, Samoa, and France.
