APPOINTMENT OF CHAPLAINS
QUESTION IN THE- HOUSE. The appointment of chaplains to the Expeditionary Porce was referred to in the House of Representatives yestorday afternoon, when tho following question was asked of tho Minister of Defence by Mr. SrCallum-.—"lf the rerport has reached him that the Military Affaire Committee of tho Anglican Synod, in its loyalty and its desire to further the interosts of its own denomination, is arranging to place before him a scheme whereby the Anglican bishops Trill have control of the appointment of .chaplains, to tho Expeditionary Force in futnre, and. that a chaplain-general in the per6on of a well-known bishop will be recommond-' cd for that appointment?" Mr. M'Callum said lie had very good [round for' believing that a little 6cheme -was going on in the Church which had the largest number of adherents in. the country. The other Churches had a' right to protest, and they would etiongly oppose any form of preference being given to the Anglican Church.. Sir .Tamee Allen said that liq knew of no such scheme, and that he did not believe any scheme as that alleged by Mr,; M'Callum had been for a moment in ex-, istonce or ever would be. Tho Anglican j Church had been treated the eame as ovory other Church in tho Dominion. A, definite policy had been laid down from the start that the number of chaplains appointed to the Expeditionary Force should be in proportion to the number of adherents of the various Churches goin? awny. Mr. M'Callum: There will be no chap-lain-gpnoral?' Sir .Tamee Allen: "No. , It was true, he said, that tho Anglicans amons themselves had arranged for the Bishop of. Wellington to make tho Anglican recommendations. •
