YESTERDAY'S MEETING
NEGOTIATIONS TO BE RESUMED There is a more hopeful outlook to the strike of 6eafnen of the Wellington "mosquito fleet." As the result of. an urgent Tequest made by tho Conciliation Comnjissioner (Mr. W.,H. Hagger) on Saturday afternoon to the members of tho executive of the Seamen's Union, to reopen negotiations • with the. Wellington branch of tho New. Zealand Shipowners'. Federation, a meeting of the men.affected was called for yesterday, afternoon at the Trades.Hall. After discussing tho pros and cons of tlio situation for over two hours, Mr. J. Adorns (actihg-seqro-ta'ry) announced to the pressmen that tho meeting had decided to approach the Shipowners Federation with a view to the reopening of negotiations. Mr. Adams 6aid that tho desire of the union, as expressed at the meeting, was to meet the representatives of the federation in conference with' a view to coming, :o some sort of compromise. '•■■■'■ QUESTIONS IN THE HOUSE In the House of Representatives yesterday evening Mr. Poole asked the Minister of Marine what was the position in regard to the local shipping strike. The Hon. G. W. Russell stated that tho Prime Minister had been considering this matter very carefully, and on Saturday last a conference had taken place, the Prime Minister presiding. It was the earnest wish of the Government that .this unfortunate strike should be settled, but -when it was it must be on lines within the law. The Prime Minister, replying to a request by Mr. Glover that no hurried drastic.action should be taken in dealing with the strike, said that the Arbitration Court could not sit until that day week, and that nothing very serious could happen until the Arbitration Court had had aa opportunity of hearing the case.
