Thorndon Red Cross Day. The Thorndon lied Cross effort has now reached the magnificent total of ,£1630. Mrs. Massey, the organiser-in-chiof, and those associated with her, have good reason to bo highly pleased with the result achieved. It lias meant a lot of hard work, but it has been well and willingly done. The committee is specially grateful for the splendid help rendered by the Maoris of Waiapu (East Coast). Mr. JS'gata, M.P., appealed to (ho peorie of his district'to do-what they could for the good cause, and Mrs. Ngata took the matter up enthusiastically. Maori and pakeha worked together with commendable energy and good will. A great sports meeting and entertainment were held, and as a result a cheque for the handsome sum of J3)50 has been received by Mrs. Massey. It will probably be augmented by some small amounts which have still to cohio in. A meeting of the committee and all others interested will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10.30 a.m. in the Sydney Street School. War Funds Collecting Committee. A meeting of the Street Collection Ci mraitteo was held in the Ked Cross Rooms, ■Mercer Street, la'st week. There were present:—Tho Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke), who presided, Mesdames. Tho Natives' Association, has consented to take the stand at Veitch and Allan's corner.

The forthcoming returned soldiers' ball, which takes place on Friday next, promises to be thoroughly successful. Special arrangements have been made for trams for Lyall Bay, Karori, and Island Bay to leave tho Town Hall at 1.30 a.m. Arrangements have also been raado for special cavriages on the Masferton afternoon train, and special leave has been arranged for thoso attending the ball from the military camps. Permission has been granted to returned dischirrgeu soldiers to wear uniform on the occasion.
